Our Love Your Clothes repair workshops are back by popular demand! In July, we’ll be hosting three free sewing workshops. Two of the workshops will be textile repair events only in Harrow and Hounslow. The third event in Hillingdon will be a combined repair event for clothes and electrical items. This combined Restart Party and Clothes Repair workshop, in collaboration with Hillingdon Friends of the Earth, is our first combined event and we are hoping to make it a success so we can hold more of them in the future.
Tackling Textile Waste
Did you know each year in the UK we throw away roughly 350,000 tonnes of clothes and textiles? That mountain of waste is estimated to be worth over £140 million! In west London, most of our textiles end up being burned for energy recovery but this is not the best economic or environmental option for disposing of textiles.
To help address our textile waste problem directly, we’ve designed our workshops to give you the opportunity to repair or re-fashion items you already own. Instead of throwing your clothes away, you’ll be given the chance to patch them up or update their look so they become fashionable again. The workshops also provide a friendly space for beginner and experienced sewers alike to come together to share knowledge and learn from each other. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll see just how simple fixing and upcycling textiles is! If you would like to see a re-fashion success story then watch our video of a previous sewing workshop.
Have a look through your clothes and bring along items in need of repair or perhaps a creative makeover. You should be able to complete up to three garments. Feel free to bring along more items for advice so you can complete them at home. The fabulous sewing tutor, Barley Massey from Fabrications, will bring along fabrics to practice on. She’ll also have pre-repaired, altered and upcycled garments for inspiration.
You’ll learn key skills such as:
- Simple alterations: how to lift or lengthen a hem or change a waistline
- Sew on missing buttons and make buttonholes
- Replace a broken zip
- Quick fixes: repair a tear or re-thread cords/elasticated areas
- Mend and darn holes discreetly or in a show off fashion
- How to darn woollens, patch holes / high wear and tear areas
- How to use a sewing machine
